Library Book Purchase Request FAQ

What if my library doesn’t have the book I want?

If a library doesn’t have a book you want, most libraries accept requests to purchase books to add to their collection. Every library has different criteria for honoring these requests, but if the book is less than two years old, there’s a good chance they will say yes. They want to include books people want to read in their stacks.

How do I get my library to purchase a book I want?

Most community libraries have a “Suggest a Purchase” or “Material Request” form right on their website. Usually, all you need to do is log into your library account, find that request tab on your dashboard, and plug in the requested information (usually, it’s the information listed above). If you prefer, you can also just ask a librarian at the front desk.

Do I need the ISBN to make a request?

Not usually, but it depends on the library. Having the exact ISBN makes the librarian’s job a lot easier, though. It ensures they order the exact book and format you want without any mixups.

What happens after I submit a request?

After you submit the info, your library’s acquisitions department will review it to see if it fits their collection guidelines and budget. If they purchase it, they will often place the book on hold for you automatically, so you are the very first person to read it when it arrives.

What if the library says they won’t purchase the book I want?

If your library declines, you can always ask if they offer interlibrary loans and can source the book from a neighboring library system. For books that are older, more than two years usually, this is often your best bet.
